SIU Prize Computer Science Silver Prize goes to the research in the field of Biomedical Engineering

 

Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan – Vice President of Research & Development Fasikl Incorporated, Minnesota, USA has been awarded the SIU Prize Computer Science Season 1 Silver Prize for his breakthrough doctoral thesis in Biomedical Engineering.

Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan has made outstanding contributions to the field of Biomedical Engineering through his doctoral thesis, titled “A High-Precision Bioelectric Neural Interface Toward Human-Machine Symbiosis”. The doctoral thesis was successfully defended and won the Best Dissertation Award in 2021 at the University of Minnesota, USA – a global leader in biomedical engineering.

Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan’s research opens a new era, allowing amputees to control prosthetics with lifelike precision while receiving sensory feedback. This is considered a major step forward in realizing the potential of human-machine symbiosis, significantly improving the life quality for millions of patients with mobility impairments worldwide.

His work combines high-precision neural microchips with deep-learning AI to decode motor intentions directly from nerve signals. Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan successfully demonstrated a neuroprosthetic hand. This is not only a technological achievement but also a testament to the vision of seamless connection between the nervous system and artificial intelligence.

In addition, Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan has contributed to several prestigious scientific projects sponsored by organizations such as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the National Science Foundation (NSF), with a total funding of 2,369,242 USD.

During his doctoral research, Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan published 19 high-impact papers in top-tier journals, contributed to 2 book chapters, and secured 2 U.S. patents with 10 more pending applications.

Currently (2024), Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan and his team at Fasikl Inc. are working tirelessly to bring this technology into clinical trials, transforming the design into a fully implantable device for patients worldwide.

SIU Prize Computer Science Season 1 Silver Prize: VND 1,000,000,000 (One billion VND) in cash; SIU Prize silver commemorative medal; and a tour worth up to VND 200,000,000 (Two hundred million VND).

In the inaugural season of 2023-2024, the SIU Prize Computer Science received over 100 nominations from 19 countries and territories. The outstanding works covered a wide range of fields: Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Network and Information Security, Telecommunications, IoT, Bioinformatics, etc. The nominations went through three rigorous rounds of evaluation by the Preliminary Council, Professional Committee and Professional Council, which consisted of leading professors, scientists, and experts in related fields from prestigious universities, research institutes, and businesses in the United States, Canada, Australia, France, and Vietnam.
