For the highly practical doctoral thesis “Toward Image Semantic Segmentation and Classification using Bracket-style Convolutional Neural Networks and Its Variants”, Dr. Hua Cam Hao has been awarded the SIU Prize Computer Science Season 1 Honorable Mention.
Dr. Hua Cam Hao is currently a Senior AI Research Engineer at TymeX Vietnam. He successfully defended his doctoral thesis in 2022 at Kyung Hee University, South Korea. His doctoral thesis, “Toward Image Semantic Segmentation and Classification using Bracket-style Convolutional Neural Networks and Its Variants”, has made significant and impressive contributions to the field of computer vision.

Dr. Hua Cam Hao’s doctoral thesis focuses on advanced technology in computer vision, namely the Bracket-style Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and the Cross-Attentional Fusion mechanism. This approach has demonstrated the ability to iteratively combine semantic details from low-resolution feature maps with contextual information from high-resolution feature maps in pairwise manner along the end-to-end flow of backbone Convolutional Neural Networks, offering effective image segmentation and classification, especially in medical and industrial applications.
What sets Dr. Hua Cam Hao’s doctoral thesis apart is the innovative development of the Bracket-style Convolutional Neural Network architecture. This model is designed not only to tackle image segmentation problems in applications such as autonomous vehicles or computational photography but also optimized for medical image classification tasks, such as retinal vessel analysis and diabetic retinopathy classification. The experimental results highlight the versatility and effectiveness of these models across various application scenarios.
In addition, Dr. Hua Cam Hao’s doctoral thesis has been validated through notable research publications in leading journals and international conferences, including 3 SCIE-indexed papers and 3 A* conference papers at IEEE SMC and IEEE EMBC. These works not only affirm the academic quality of his thesis but also demonstrate the practical applicability of the models he has developed.

We also cannot overlook Dr. Hua Cam Hao’s promising future research directions. He is working on developing faster and more compact versions of this deep learning model using Knowledge Distillation and expanding its applications to other visual perception areas, such as object detection and image super-resolution.
